Gear Review: Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody
A super warm jacket that compresses down to softball size.
[most packable]
It compresses down nearly as small as a softball, but is warm enough to serve as three-season insulation and as part of a cold-weather layering system. That made the Nano Puff an instant favorite of one careful-packing tester, who proceeded to wear it for 40-plus days over a six-month period. “It became my go-to puffy, whether I was summer camping in Maine or ski-touring for a week in Norway,” she says.
The 100-percent-recyled nylon shell blocks wind, and a water-resistant DWR fends off drizzle and wet snow. It’s insulated with PrimaLoft One, a quick-dry synthetic that’s quilted to prevent it from shifting around and developing cold spots. The tapered fit offers good mobility, and the elasticized hood stretches to fit over smaller helmets, yet is svelte enough to fit under, too. Gripe: The pockets are a tad low, so they fall under a hipbelt. $199; 12 oz.; m’s XS-XXL, w’s XS-XL; patagonia.com
