Gear Review: Outdoor Research Virtuoso Puffy Jacket

This puffy has high-end weatherproofing and an insulated, versatile hood

With Pertex Endurance for high-end weatherproofing and 650-fill down that keeps the cost in check, this jacket delivers all-mountain performance for a reasonable price. The shell, with 20-denier ripstop polyester in the torso and highly water-resistant Endurance on the shoulders and sleeves, handled everything the Sierra Nevada threw at me.

On drizzly days, water beaded right off, so there was no need to stop and add a shell. The insulated hood is one of the most versatile I’ve used; it’s helmet-compatible, with side and back adjustments that cinch it down over a cap. The cut allows layering over and under, and it’s trim enough to be thermally efficient. $220; 1 lb. 1 oz. (w’s M); m’s S-XL, w’s XS-XL; orgear.com.
