Gear Review: Outdoor Research Mt. Baker Modular Mitt

Two-layer insulated mitts lined with both synthetic fill and fleece.

Heading somewhere with high frostbite potential? Pack these two-layer insulated mitts, lined with both synthetic fill and fleece. The shell is constructed with a Gore-Tex-backed, 70-denier taslan polyester, the same tough stuff used in OR’s Editors’ Choice Gold Award-winning Crocodile Gaiters.

The five-fingered insert has rubberized fingertips and is backed with 170 grams of PrimaLoft. “When winds picked up and temps dropped to near zero, I switched to these mitts and kept full feeling and sufficient dexterity while using my ice axe,” said one tester after a Mt. Rainier climb. “These gloves are like an insurance policy that you get to use,” says another tester.
