Gear Review: Oboz Traverse Low Hiking Shoes

Low-cut hiking boots that are grippy in all conditions.

Brand: Traverse Low Men's

Model: Oboz

Verdict
I wore these on early-spring dayhikes in southern Utah and was impressed by the grippiness in all conditions, thanks to deep outsole lugs and sticky rubber. An EVA midsole (see Tech Talk) with a partial nylon shank under the arch and a molded rubber heel cup deliver enough support for hiking all day with 20 pounds. Plus, welded synthetic overlays anchor the metal lace hooks and wrap around the mid-foot, beefing up lateral stability. Mesh uppers breathe really well but keep grit out. The protective toecap and side guards stood up to abuse when I hiked off-trail on coarse sandstone. Bonus: Oboz’s BFit Deluxe footbeds compare with good after-market insoles—a $30+ value. $125; 2 lbs. (9); m’s 8-14; obozfootwear.com
