Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Bokta Hardshell Pants

Even the most breathable waterproof shells often feel steamy during taxing climbs. But not the Bokta. “I stayed so cool and dry that I actually wore it uphill and down,” says our Colorado tester. The three-layer Bokta is more comfortable than most—in a wider range of conditions—thanks to Dry.Q Elite, Mountain Hardwear’s elaboration on eVent’s waterproof/breathable laminate. As in other garments, we found that the eVent did a great job of moving moist air out before heat and wetness collected.

Features are streamlined, which keeps weight low, yet full side zips allow for venting and a drop-seat option for answering nature’s call with minimum exposure. A built-in belt snugs up the waist, and removable suspenders keep the pants from sagging. One zippered thigh pocket holds lip balm or a lens cloth, and two layers at the cuff (an internal snow gaiter and a reinforced outer pant) resist sharp ski edges and keeps snow out of boots. Despite the trim weight, durability is excellent.
