Gear Review: Millet Aerial Max Evo Hardshell
This Millet hardshell is a great climbing jacket due to its high range of motion.
Best for Climbing
On a rain-, hail-, and wind-stricken expedition in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park, this tough shell withstood abrasion against brush and sharp rocks, yet it didn’t restrict mobility like some hard-duty jackets. Credit the four-way stretch Gore-Tex Paclite, which enhances range of motion and, because it gives, is less likely to tear than nonstretch fabrics. The jacket also has reinforced panels across high-wear areas on the shoulders.
The trim cut in the arms and torso keeps fabric out of the way of ropes and climbing harnesses, and the helmet-compatible hood–with three-inch wide brim–cinches down comfortably for helmet-less use or snugly rolls away. The only complaint: no pit zips. $374; 15 oz. (w’s medium); men’s S-XL; women’s XS-XL; milletusa.com
