Gear Review: Marmot Big Wall Short

Light, tough shorts ideal for hiking and hanging.

“As tough as Carhartts, but waaayyyy lighter,” rejoiced one tester after wearing the Marmot Big Wall Short. It’s styled like a work pant, right down to the canvas-style weave. But it’s made of hollow-core nylon, which makes the Big Wall lighter and more quick-drying. An inseam gusset provides plenty of mobility for high-stepping and scrambling. Downside: The belt loops, which sit beneath a pack’s hipbelt, caused chafing under a heavy load. $80; 9 oz. (M); marmot.com
