Gear Review: Mammut Pilgrim/Vinson Puffy Down Jacket

This overstuffed puffy was the warmest of the bunch with a high-collared hood and hand gaiters.

Warmest

After a month-long stint of camping, skiing, and dog mushing in below-freezing temps, our three-woman test team deemed the overstuffed 650-fill Pilgrim (the Vinson is the hoodless men’s version) “superwarm and protective.” Draft seals are excellent, with stretchy Lycra hand gaiters and thumb holes to shield wrists from chilly air and a high-collared, snug-fitting hood that fits like a balaclava.

The polyester shell repelled moisture and kept the down from losing loft during a wet, all-day ski session on Hatcher Pass in Alaska. Demerit: The Michelin-Man styling won’t get you any dates around town. $229/$219; 1 lb. 9 oz.; men’s S-XXL; women’s XS-XL; mammut.ch
