Gear Review: Mammut Eisfeld/Eismeer Softshell Pants

Tough, weather-resistant, and stretchy, these pants are also supremely breathable.

Tough, weather-resistant, and stretchy, these pants (women’s Eismeer is shown) are supremely breathable. “They never felt clammy, even on the longest climbs,” a tester reports. Credit zippered thigh vents and a seam technology that minimizes fabric overlap. The Schoeller Dryskin fabric is treated with ColdBlack, which reflects sunlight and kept these pants comfortable during 60°F ascents. Its tight weave also delivered ample protection on windy, 5°F summits.

Fit is outstanding: Velcro waistband tabs prevent gaps to keep snow and wind out, and removable suspenders hold the pants in place while climbing. The built-in gaiters cinch over big boots, and Kevlar-infused crampon patches resist sharp points. After a full season, even the ankles look new. Only downside? The price.
