Instant classic alert: The 950 Pro hits a sweet balance between low weight and high warmth. It’s lighter than most competitors, thanks to 850-fill down, and it kept testers toasty below its temp rating. “Warm into the low teens,” pronounced our tester after a December trip in Utah. The bag’s 95-to-5 ratio of down clusters to feathers is the highest among three-season bags we tested, providing unmatched loft and thermal efficiency (by comparison, the Sierra Designs Vapor is 90/10).
And trapezoidal baffles overlap each other slightly at the edges to prevent the insulation from shifting and forming cold spots. Credit also goes to the ample draft collar that snugs up like a turtleneck, fat draft tube, and hood opening that cinches shut to the diameter of a ping-pong ball. An uncoated 20-denier ripstop shell saves weight, and its tight weave keeps condensation from wetting through. Inside, a moisture-wicking Tactel lining has a dreamy cottony feel (the same stuff is used to make undies).
The bag’s efficient tailoring (29.5 inches across the chest) works better for bean poles than fire plugs; a big tester (6’6”, more than 200 pounds) says he felt straight-jacketed. In a compression sack, the bag scrunches down to volleyball-size. Complaints: Down snuck out through the stitching at the foot (“Handle with care,” says one tester), and we experienced zipper snags, despite the guard. $324; 2 lbs. 2 oz.; 20°F
