With 200 grams of synthetic fill—enough to take the chill off in icy conditions, but not so much as to cause sweating in moderate temps—the Revel is more versatile than most deep-winter shoes. But it’s still suitable for sub-zero temps, thanks to the insulative barrier of its three-layer midsole. A honeycomb of EVA traps warm air, a reflective heat shield bounces it back, and a moisture-managing wool felt footbed amps up coziness.

The Nubuck upper is lined with a waterproof/breathable membrane, and it never wet out, even on long, sloppy hikes. Underfoot support allowed testers to carry up to 35 pounds.

Traction is superb: The deep lugs are siped (there are thin cuts in the rubber), so the tread suctions onto icy trails.Best for wide feet.
