Gear Review: Garmont Voodoo Ski Boots

“This innovative lightweight is the most powerful three-buckle tele boot I’ve skied,” says a tester with a decade of boot-bashing to his credit. “The Voodoo can drive the stiffest resort ski, yet it’s soft and supple enough to finesse a lightweight powder board on a multiday backcountry tour.” This versatility comes from two unique features. First, Garmont softened and widened the toe bellows, then moved them 8 centimeters back, placing them directly above the ball of your foot (rather than the toe crease, like most boots). The result is a more ergonomic feel combined with targeted energy transfer from your body down through your foot.

The Voodoo also has three differing thicknesses of Pebax plastic in the shell, which creates varying levels of stiffness for added sensitivity. The upper cuff has a smooth, progressive forward flex—perfect for deep knee bends in narrow, stay-on-your-game couloirs. And the shell is tongue-free, creating a super-snug overlapping fit.

The roomier-than-average toe box accommodates bunions common to many athletes; the upper shell has a pocket punched into it above the navicular bone (above the arch); and a deep heel cup helps prevent blisters. “Between the fit, the respectable weight, and the performance, this is the only boot most knee droppers will ever need,” says our tester.
