Gear Review: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Point-and-Shoot Camera

A point-and-shoot that fires 1080HD video and geo-tags photos.

A point-and-shoot that fires 1080HD video and geo-tags photos? We dig it. Our photo editor particularly loves the intuitive features and svelte, 1.1-inch-thick, packable size of the SX230 HS. She also praises its ability to handle low light, thanks to 12.1-megapixel hardware and above-average 3200 ISO capability, which reduces visual noise to spit out crisp, clear images.

Testers tout the 14X optical zoom, and our gear editor likes the artsy monochrome setting. “Super-cool if you want to channel your inner Ansel,” she says.

In the field, the GPS locked on within 30 seconds, and at home, free Google Maps-powered software (although proprietary) allowed us to easily review photos based on location. Downside: Flash lag time makes it hard to take action shots in low light.
