Gear Review: Boreas Bootlegger
The versatile gear-hauling system by Boreas Gear.
Brand: Boreas
Model: Bootlegger
Verdict
One frame, three pack bags. That’s the genius behind this versatile gear-hauling system. I used the 28-liter, top-loading Hopper daypack on many climbing trips and hikes and prized its organized, five-pocket layout. The 30-liter roll-top Scrimshaw drybag (it’s fully seam-taped and submarine dry) came in handy when I wanted full-on protection, like while spring skiing through old-growth forests. And the 13-liter Torpedo hydration pack (no bladder included) was perfect for a big bike ride over Oregon’s McKenzie Pass. Switching bags is easy: Sleeves slip securely over the framesheet’s four corners. The lightly padded shoulder straps and aluminum perimeter frame support up to 20 pounds. $199; 2 lbs. 4 oz. to 2 lbs. 12 oz. (depending on packbag); boreasgear.com

“A clever strap lets you tension the frame to convert it from standard to trampoline style for increased ventilation.”
