Gear Review: Black Diamond Sabretooth Crampons

These stainless steel crampons are perfect for all your winter climbing needs.

“I could do all of my winter climbing with this single pair of crampons,” says a Colorado ice rat who scratched up multi-pitch mixed routes near Ouray. “The broad, horizontal front points ate up moderate ice and the steep stuff.”

The Sabretooth’s stainless steel equals no rust-risk, even if you forget them in a wet pack for two weeks, as one tester did. And at a relatively light 2 lbs. 2 oz. for the pair, the Sabretooths help keep leg fatigue to a minimum. The micro-adjust heel bails let you dial in the sizing, and the included antiballing plates all but eliminate dangerous snow buildup during warm alpine afternoons.

“The strategically placed secondary points improved my stability,” adds another tester who climbed Dream Weaver, a long couloir in Rocky Mountain National Park.
