Gear Review: adidas Terrex Skyclimb Hardshell Jacket
The comfort of a softshell with the protection of a hardshell.
[most comfortable]
“It has the comfort of a softshell with the protection of a hardshell,” reports a tester who used the coat for more than 40 days of skiing and climbing. The comfort key: a Cocona treatment on the back of the three-layer waterproof/breathable laminate. It consists of active particles—a blend of carbon derived from coconut shells and volcanic minerals—that attract moisture, remove it from the microclimate between your body and the shell, and accelerate evaporation. Cocona is basically a desiccant, which explains why our tester found that it kept her feeling dry and remarkably unclammy (she often wore it over just a short-sleeved T-shirt) throughout a grueling five-day trek around Mt. Adams in a fearsome snowstorm. Generous 18-inch pit zips also help with venting. And soft, stretchy polyester on the collar, torso, and sides further boost comfort. Big guy caution: The slim-fit may be too tight in the shoulders and chest. $395; 1 lb. 6 oz.; m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-L; adidas.com/outdoor
