Gear Guide 2009: Sierra Designs Convert 2 Tent Review
This is one of the lightest, toughest four-season tent on the market.
Top Ultralight
Just a few years ago, four pounds was the low bar for three-season tents. Now this mountaineering shelter hits the mark. And it’s not a case of simply slashing space. The Convert’s floor comfortably fit a pair of 6’2″ testers, who reported a few inches of surplus space in both length and width. The four-pole structure stood strong in howling winds on Washington’s Mt. Baker, and two ceiling vents prevented condensation.
You only get a single door and one smallish vestibule (it won’t hold two climbers’ gear), but that’s no surprise–this tent is all about ruthless ounce-cutting, and even the undersize vestibule is detachable (saving 26 ounces). Quibble: The brow pole is difficult to seat in the grommets. $449; 4 lbs. 2 oz.Sierradesigns.com
