Gear Guide 2009: Pacific Outdoor Peak Oyl Aero Mtn Sleeping Pad Review

This pad features Aspen Aero Gel for warmth and recycled PET nylon for green-ness.

Warmest

Get a pad that’s light enough for summer trips and warm enough for winter. This mat has strips of Aspen Aero Gel–the world’s least heat-conductive substance–under the torso. The Aero Gel adds minimal weight but makes the pad feel magically warmer than other 1.5-inch-thick self-inflaters.

It’s also greener than most: The Peak Oyl series is made of recycled PET nylon (cover fabric) and renewable, petroleum-free palm oil (40 percent of the foam fill). The pad is just as cushy as comparably thick mats, and the raised “rails” on each side help prevent rolling. Also available in women’s, four other sizes, and a three-season, inch-thick series. $129; 1 lb. 11 oz.; 20″x72″x1.5″; pacoutdoor.com
