Gear Guide 2009: Merrell Chameleon Evo Mid Boot Review

This boot combines lightweight, sneaker-like comfort with solid support.

Summer Comfort

Like the Arc Wind, this men’s lightweight, non-waterproof midcut hit a sweet spot we love. “It provides sneaker comfort with plenty of support and stability for summer dayhiking or backpacking,” one editor wrote.

Other testers who waltzed the Evo around Colorado’s Front Range deemed it instantly comfortable–with a fit that’s moderately roomy from heel to toes, good for average to slightly wide feet–and solid when carrying up to 30 pounds on trail. Mesh panels in the nubuck leather uppers (and no membrane) provide superior breathability. But the uppers dry slowly and show early wear–they won’t last long if you bash them off-trail. Best for medium-volume feet. $115; 2 lbs. 6 oz. Merrell.com
