Gear Guide 2009: Crumpler Bumper Issue Review

Want rugged? Go for the Crumpler Bumper Issue, a rough and tough pack that takes on narrow slot canyons and unforgiving brush fields.

Most Durable

This ultra-rugged and ultra-bright hydration pack is not for introverts, but testers found it perfect for slot canyon grind-a-thons because of the stable ride, tough Cordura fabric, and protective flaps that cover all plastic buckles. The top-loading bag has a flexy, padded backpanel, simple flap-over closure, and the interior is divided into three vertical compartments, with two additional overlapping map/document pockets–a layout that worked well for backcountry or around-town use.

A 100-ounce Source hydration bladder is included (its sliding clip closure is wide-mouthed for easy stream-filling). Bummer: Threading the hydration tube through the harness sleeves is awkward. $95; 1,400 cu. in.; 2 lbs. 12 oz. Crumplerbags.com
