Brand: FlyLow Gear
Model: Smitty Mitten
These mitts felt like expedition puffies for our hands—only without the bulk. Made of super-tough cowhide that’s baked and waxed for waterproofing, the Smittys are stuffed with PrimaLoft Silver Eco insulation, enough to keep one tester’s hands toasty whether he was touring in Norway or riding the chairlift in Colorado in 25°F weather. “They’re thin enough to stash in my pants’ cargo pocket, though,” our tester says. The Smittys’ full-leather construction meant they held up well over a full season. Nice touch: Foam on the back of the hand helps protect against scrapes with branches and ice.
“Mittens are often too bulky for me to really feel my poles, but the Smittys are low-profile enough that dexterity was better than expected,” one tester says.
Weight: 7 oz.
