Eddie Bauer BC Freshline 2.0/BC Fineline 2.0

Best protection

Brand: Eddie Bauer Gear Reviews

Model: BC Freshline 2.0/BC Fineline 2.0

Our take Looking for tank-level protection? This is your shell. We hunkered down in the Freshline (the Fineline is the women’s version) during a rainstorm-turned-blizzard on Colorado’s Mt. Massive, and stayed dry throughout. Clutch features: a stay-put, helmet-friendly, three-point-adjustable hood; high, face-shielding collar; and thumb loops that stretch over even heavy gloves for a tight seal. And 75-denier nylon proved impenetrable to trees and sharp rocks. Tradeoff: Tanks don’t come cheap. Or light.

The Details The bodymapped construction—tougher eVent DVexpedition for protection on the shoulders, arms, and hood and more air-permeable eVent DValpine across the back and pits—proved very breathable. “On a bluebird, 25°F day in Colorado I was working hard skinning uphill, but never felt clammy,” one tester says. Plentiful pockets let us stash snacks (two chest) and goggles or skins (internal mesh).

Trail cred “The fit is perfect—not so baggy as to get in the way, but not too tight to inhibit movement or layering,” one tester notes.
