Decathlon Trek 100

Editors' choice for a bargain puffy from the 2018 Fall/Winter Gear Guide.

Brand: Decathlon

Model: Trek 100

None

When we first saw the price of this lightweight puffy, we thought it was a typo. A warm, packable jacket for $45? Believe it.

The Trek 100 is made by Decathlon, a European outdoor goods giant (it has more than 1,400 stores in 42 countries) that opened its first U.S. location in San Francisco last year. (It does online sales, too.) Decathlon says it keeps prices low with sheer volume; we found some corner cutting (see below), but even so, this jacket is a steal for folks who just need a functional, no-frills puffy. “During a spring ascent of Mt. Rainier’s Disappointment Cleaver Route, it kept me warm under a shell on 20°F alpine starts, but it wasn’t so suffocating that I had to take it off immediately once I got moving,” our tester says. The jacket has 100 grams of synthetic fill in the body and 80 grams in the sleeves and hood. Our tester also liked the relaxed fit, which slides smoothly over layers but doesn’t leave a lot of fabric flapping around.

Of course, at this price there are some compromises. The loose hood flops around even when it’s on your head, yet doesn’t fit over a ski helmet, and the polyester face fabric’s DWR wets out quickly in moderate precip. Still, testers praised the soft interior. The Trek 100 packs down to the size of a small loaf of bread.

Weight: 1 lb. 4 oz. (m’s M)

Sizes: Men’s S-XXXL, Women’s XS-XXL
