Warmth “It’s surprisingly warm for a jacket that squishes down to grapefruit size,” says a tester who wore the Turbodown while stargazing on 30°F nights in Iceland’s Skaftafell National Park with just a baselayer underneath. “It kills wind like no other light puffy I’ve worn,” said his partner after a damp, blustery day on Svinafellsjökull Glacier. The secret: 850-fill hydrophobic goose down stacked over a layer of polyester fill and sandwiched between two sheets of windproof OmniHeat Thermal Reflective lining material, which has thousands of silver dots that bounce heat back at you.
Breathability “The triple whammy of warmth made me fearful that I’d turn into a sweat bucket,” says one hot-blooded tester. But the soft lining material wicks sweat into the synthetic insulation, which can handle moist conditions better than down, without any loss of loft. “It proved ideal for ice climbing and belaying on 10°F days at New Hampshire’s Frankenstein Cliffs.”
Gripes The skinny front zip is temperamental (especially with gloved hands).
