Boot Review: Hi-Tec Apex

A cushy sole makes these a good choice for long trail days.

Got tender feet? The Apex’s thick EVA midsole feels luxuriously cushioned underfoot, even on hard slickrock. During long rambles in Capitol Reef National Park, the Vibram sole’s beveled lugs cleared mud easily and grabbed well on rock. And the waterproof/breathable eVent liner-combined with partial-mesh uppers-kept the shoes impressively cool. The upper’s Nubuk perimeter and heel reinforcements warded off abrasion on crumbly sidehills, but the toe is not as well protected as the others here. A steel shank enhances underfoot support for moderate loads, though it also increases weight. Downside: The bulky tongue can develop uncomfortable folds. Best for high-volume feet.
