Boot Review: Five Ten Via Ferrata

Snow-covered trails are no match for this shoe

What happens when you plan a 20-mile autumn dayhike in New Hampshire’s Presidentials and it snows the night before? You grin and go in these waterproof, very breathable, and impressively supportive low-cut hikers. Our Northwest editor did just that, and says his feet stayed dry (with gaiters) in drifts up to knee deep. He also likes the moderately stiff midsole, which prevented foot fatigue through 8,000 feet of vertical. The Stealth S1 sole stuck to rime ice as well as wind-scoured rock, and an edging platform around the toe aids steeper scrambling. Best for low- to medium-volume feet.
