Bomber Gear Halo 5.0 Top
Ideal for truly arctic conditions, it’s hands-down the toastiest layer we tested this year.
Brand: Bomber Gear
Model: Halo 5.0 Top
Warmth “Like a fleece-lined drysuit!” says a Colorado tester of this thick Polartec Power Dry baselayer. Skiers took the Halo down to -20°F comfortably in British Columbia and up to the low 20s in Colorado when worn with just a shell. “I loved how it let me skip the midlayer to reduce bulk,” reports a tester. Thinner panels on the arms and sides help vent heat, but make no mistake: This top is too hot for active use above 25°F.
Fit It’s tight-fitting, but four-way stretch and articulated arms preserve range of motion. Ding: Thumbhole edges dug into testers’ hands.
Wicking The Halo wicked fairly well in cold weather. But when hiking hard near its upper temperature limit, testers quickly overwhelmed the fabric with sweat.
Stink resistance Multiday warning: Despite a silver-ion-based antimicrobial treatment, the Halo ripened quickly, after just a day.
