Biolite BaseLantern XL
Feature-rich lantern
Brand: BioLite
Model: BaseLantern XL
Our take If you want your very own backcountry power grid—with light—get the BaseLantern. Fully charged, this station pumps out enough power (12,000 mAh via two USB ports) to juice your phone six times, your tablet twice, or your GoPro HERO5 Session (page 98) a ridiculous 10 times. (Hook it up to a solar panel for seemingly endless power.) But the true off-grid power connoisseur will appreciate that this charging station doubles as a 500-lumen lantern that can illuminate an entire campsite for some eight hours straight at full power. Our favorite feature is the Bluetooth capability, which lets you adjust settings remotely and even set up proximity control from the app, so the lantern will automatically turn off when your phone leaves the radius that you set. Bonus: Multicolored lights are party-ready.
Trail cred “It was awesome leaving the lantern on while everyone was getting ready for bed at our camp in Colorado’s Indian Peaks,” says our tester. “Then I could turn it off from my phone while snuggled in my bag when everyone was done.”
