Big Agnes Pin Ears 20

Lightweight Bargain

Brand: Big Agnes

Model: Pin Ears 20

Our take Tired of snagging zippers? You won’t have that problem with the Pin Ears; it doesn’t have any. The upper part of this bag has a 26-by-28-inch Dutch (or half) door opening that allows access to the cocoon-like lower bag. One side of the door is permanently affixed, while the other is secured with (slightly fiddly) hooks. The zipperless design lets Big Agnes use affordable 650-fill duck down without much of a weight penalty. Downside: Getting into the bag is a bit awkward; getting out quickly is plain hard. We stayed warm in temps down to the mid-20s in Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks, but the lack of a zipper makes it impossible to vent the footbox in warmer temps.

The details The oversized, snuggly draft collar was a tester favorite, although cinching the opening down to blowhole size is difficult. The bag’s upper half has a 20-inch-wide sleeping pad sleeve (no insulation) across the bottom, which saves additional weight.

Trail cred “You kind of have to shimmy down into the bag, but it’s super-comfy once you’re in. I never felt restricted,” says a Colorado tester. “This became my go-to bag for three-season trips.”
