Weather Protection The fabric is so thin, you’d swear it wasn’t insulated. But the DWR-treated ripstop nylon is backed by thin microfleece that adds a surprising amount of warmth, given its scant bulk. It kept our tester warm—sometimes too warm—while skinning in 25°F temperatures on Alaska’s Hatcher Pass. “I overheated during exertions in anything but temps below 18°F,” says our tester, who wished for pit zips to dump heat. But with no waterproof or windproof panels to inhibit breathability, testers stayed dry during high-exertion, cold-weather tours. The DWR treatment repelled all but sustained precipitation: Brief bouts of snow or drizzle don’t soak the fabric.
Weight Savings Elasticized wrist gussets (instead of Velcro tabs) save weight and create a streamlined fit when paired with gloves and a hardshell. And the unique, uninsulated nylon hood (designed to be worn under, not over a helmet) includes just one simple cinch cord, low on the back of the head. “It does a good job of letting heat escape while also sheltering my neck from icy winds,” reports one tester.
Fit The long length (the hem hits at the upper thigh) and drop back cut kept testers’ lower backs protected in all situations. And a generous fit through the torso allows for additional layers underneath.
