Altra Running Olympus 2.0 Trail Runner

Tons of cushioning and a wide toe box make this one of the most comfortable trail runners we tested.

Brand: Altra Running

Model: Olympus 2.0 Trail Runner

Cushioning

The 36mm, squishy dual-density EVA midsole was enough for one tester to comfortably haul a 40-pound pack on a week-long hiking trip in Europe—and to save another’s feet on a 3-mile downhill sprint off Angels Landing in Zion National Park. When we ran across 6 miles of uneven rocks in Escalante, Utah, the fat cushioning sucked up all the bumps. “It made a crappy trail feel way smoother,” one tester says.

Traction

The rubber outsole shined during a week-long canyoneering trip in Escalante. “We did some touchy scrambling up some pour-offs,” our tester says. “Never slipped once.”

Fit

We are huge fans of the toebox, which let our toes splay and accommodated swelling (even for wide-footed testers).

Breathability

The breathable mesh upper let one tester spend a week backpacking a Utah desert without overheating his feet. The downside? The mesh let a lot of sand into the shoe: “I had to dump out my shoes every few miles out there,” he says.
