2011 Editors' Choice Snow Award: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All Season Sleeping Pad

An inflatable sleeping pad that packs small but kept our tester warm down to -15°

The NeoAir All Season may be small—packed, it’s not much bigger than a one-liter water bottle—but it’s mighty: This inflatable sleeping pad kept our tester warm through -15˚F nights in the Japanese Alps. “The biggest upgrade in winter camping since down booties,” he raves. “I honestly might start sleeping on it at my house.” A winterized version of the 2009 Editors’ Choice Award-winning NeoAir, the All Season eliminates bulky, heavy insulation by using a design that traps warm air and reflects it back at you.

A complex matrix of hundreds of tiny air-supported cells limit convective heat loss by restricting the movement of warmed air, and three layers of super-thin aluminum sheets (embedded in that cell matrix) reflect body heat back to the sleeper. When bedded down on snow in Svalbard (700 miles from the North Pole), our tester stayed cozy through “some of the most extreme conditions I’ve endured.”
