Appalachian Trail: VA 42 to VA 624

Go from the watery flats of Sinking Creek to the knifelike ridges of Cove Mountain on this 26.5-mile leg. Other highlights: A 300-year-old Keffer Oak and the Medieval-named rock called Dragons Tooth.

To Trailhead

Start: From Blue Grass Trail/VA 42 and Old Newport Rd. in Newport, VA, head northeast on VA 42 for 7.3 miles to trail crossing. End: From Catawba Valley Dr./VA 311 and Catawba Creek Rd. in Catawba, VA, head west on Catawba Valley Dr./VA 311. In 2.3 miles, turn left onto Newport Rd. Go .3 mile to trail crossing.
