Chattanooga, TN: Collins Gulf

Combine the Collins Gulf and Stagecoach Road Historic trails for a 12.2-mile loop that takes in bluff overlooks and several trailside waterfalls.

Trip Tools

Link the Collins Gulf and Stagecoach Road Historic trails with short connector trails to make one of the most fascinating loop hikes in South Cumberland. From the trailhead, the route drops into Collins Gulf and starts a counterclockwise loop. At the bottom of the gulf (mile 1.3), cross the Collins River on a suspension bridge before ascending to the gorge’s east rim.
Trace the rim north, crossing numerous creeks and picturesque overlooks, then merge onto the Stagecoach Road Historic Trail for a nearly 800-foot descent back into the gulf. After 7.7 miles, the route veers southeast, paralleling the Collins River (you’ll ford the river two times along this stretch). Four miles later, cross a suspension bridge next to Suter Falls, a dramatic waterfall that pours over a massive rock ledge. Past the waterfall, the trail ascends back to the rim and returns to the trailhead.
Note: During rainy months, this hike features many wet crossings. In freezing temperatures the trail is closed at Suter Falls due to ice danger.
