An Arctic wildlife extravaganza

Early July is a time of wildlife magic at Ivvavik National Park. The fabled Porcupine Herd, 123,000 caribou strong, moves off its calving ground onto the coastal plain where it begins its relentless march inland. Bands of 500 caribou, and occasionally a strand of 10,000, drift by raft parties that journey down the Firth River. Also available to view are muskox, wolves, grizzly bears, gyrfalcons and eagles. Allow 10 to 12 days for the 130-kilometer float from Margaret Lake to the Beaufort Sea.
