Trail Chef: Post-Peak Pig-Outs

What's your favorite celebratory feast?

One June day, after a long snow climb up Taylor Glacier, Rocky Mountain National Park, my friends and I were slogging down the trail, exhausted. We still had several miles to go before the car when suddenly one friend, Brian, asked, “Do you hear that?” We listened. Nothing.
“That weird noise. It’s coming from over there,” he insisted, moving off the trail toward the stream. We followed him, eyebrows raised.
Our mystification increased as he crouched over the water. “Aha, I found it!” he cried, standing up and raising a six-pack of PBR into the air victoriously.
From under a shady tree and with opened cans in hand, we learned that sometime during the ascent, Brian had snuck off and hidden the beer (which he had schlepped for miles) in the stream, as a surprise reward for everyone later. It was sort-of his post-hike ritual.
Which got me to thinking about my own post-hike feasts. After long summit days, I typically wolf down deep-dish pizza with honey drizzled on the crust. After a weeklong backpack, however, my vegetable-deprived body craves salad, and I gorge on crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and red peppers. My partners have their own spectacular binges, including one friend who, no joke, hoovers four Burger King Whoppers. For others, it’s a DQ Blizzard with Oreos and fudge.
Of course, after a day of grueling exertion or weeks of deprivation, these feasts taste exponentially better than they would if you just ate them any old day. It’s all about the contrast. So what’s your favorite post-hike fare? I want some ideas for next weekend!

After a weekend of clearing trails, I almost always hit my local burrito joint and get a pollo asada burrito with everything, including sour cream and guacamole. I think it's the ideal mixture of taste, calories, and nutrition. Guacamole should be one of the 4 food groups IMHO.

Pancakes. For some reason, breakfast always hits the spot when I get off the trail, regardless of the hour.

I find that buffets are dangerous due to the fact that whatever is in them tastes better after some time on the trail...

A Rio Grande skillt breakfast from Village Inn! Sunny side up eggs on top... Pancakes on the side... Bottomless Iced Tea and Water... Mmmmmmm!

A giant veggie burger loaded with every possible condiment, avocado, grilled onions and mushrooms, and a side of tater tots.

And lots and lots of beer.

My son and I always take along a can of Dole Pineapple, chunks or rings. We leave it in the car as our "post hike celebration." It helps my 8yr. to have something to look forward to, and it seems to be sweeter everytime.

After a long week of backpacking my friends and I normally seek out the most hole in the wall style pizza place and destroy some greasy pie. Then we normally find an equally hole in the wall style pub and split a few pitchers of brew.

Usually after a hike me and my buddy are so wiped out that I drop him off at his place and I head home.

Once, however, we did stop at a good mexican restaurant after our hike. smelling rank as all get out.

but it was a good meal.

I always find a local cafe near my hike or backpack. If I can, I buy breakfast with an omelette or hashbrowns. If it's too late in the day for that, I get a burger and fries. I normally eat much healthier fare, but after a long hike it's what I gotta have.

Ahhhh, I was just discussing this with a friend yesterday actually. My post-bag tradition is a few slices of gas station pepperoni pizza dripping with extra hot sauce. An ice cold beer goes nicely with this also. :)
