Raw bacon is probably the rule, or overdone eggs if the bacon is done. I would be afraid that I would catch the bag on fire and get blamed for something like the Bastrop Fire if I got the bacon crispy as I like it.
I learned to do this in Boy Scouts along with making biscuits in a paper cup. Elisabeth could have just placed the bag on the part of the wood that was not burning instead of using a stick. Everybody is always amazed when I do this.
I had to try it because Elizabeth made it look so easy. I wish I had pictures of the events that followed my try at the eggs and bacon in a bag. Not only were the bacon and eggs raw but both me and my backpacking partners bags burst into flames. Needless to say we resorted to Powerbars after that.
After watching this, not only do I want to go try it... but I also want to marry Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan!
Is there a vegetarian oil to use in lieu of bacon grease?
my boyfriend and I did the eggs in the orange thing this summer a bunch of times! mmm...
Will be doing it.
Will be doing it.
I am a Scoutmaster also and can't wait to try this out on our next camping trip.
Wow - I'm impressed. I would never have believed this if I hadn't seen it. Can't believe it didn't catch fire.
I was originally shown this impressive trick as a boy scout as well. We added the bacon only first. This allows more time for it to cook and will also help seal the bag better for the eggs. Once you hear the bacon sizzling away then we would add the eggs.
your food would be super charred at the bottom
Yes, the orange peel has been in Scout literature for a long time too. Rocks are very useful too, just make sure they don't have water inside them and explode.
The eggs in a bag has been in the Boy Scout handbook and literature for years. It is nothing new. It really does work. I still like the dutch ovens though.
How did you get the rock hot in time for breakfast?
Check yes for Christmastime
back in the 60's our scout master used to take us on a hike he called cave man camping, which meant no pots no pans for breakfast we would cook bacon on a rock cut an orange in half turn it inside out eat the pulp reverse it coat the iside with some oil put a raw egg inside and place that on the coals and viola eggs and bacon
I want to try that NOW THAT I'M HUNGRY A+
