Bejindy, big deal about the stuff you made up. I'm 50 and can still smoke you (except the pull-ups, nice)

To those in the Midwest or other places with less terrain than the Rockies, learning to orient your map to your surroundings becomes a more highly developed skill than when you are standing in the mountains with promenent peaks before you. Since moving to Indiana 20+ years ago from Oregon and Arkansas, I've learned to study the drainage patterns of rivers, creeks and swales. Gaining an understanding of the soil types - yes soil types -from a USDA Soil Survey has been extremely valuable in recognizing topo variations while in the field. I can easily hike in Crosby or Miami type soils, but I know if I run into Patton or Houghton soils, I may go knee deep in the muck. The game trails also follow certain patterns based on site conditions. Understanding the site in which you are going gives you a tremendous advantage over the person who wanders aimlessly or without understanding.

How about some sportsmanship?

People...This is the training for the challenge NOT the challenge itself. We have 5 weeks of training and then after that we have to video tape ourselves performing. Don't get too confident yet.
Remember, this is going to be about fitness AND skill level. Mother Nature can be a B**** so don't act like you're superheros. Respect goes a long way...

You tough guys forget that it takes way more than being fit to be in this challenge. It is not in the least bit easy to start a fire with one match, especially after all the rain we've had. And no you can't cheat by dousing it with lighter fluid or use a huge wad of newspaper. And I would wager many cannot use a map and compass properly, either.

Sounds like there is quite a few that are already too fit for this program.

So excited for TUES as Ohio will be adding a lil something extra to the mix :
Tuesday: Showers. High near 49. North wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

one match folks!

Okay Monday, did five sets of 10 pull-ups, 5 of 30 sit-ups and push-ups, and 5 of 20 dips. Ran about 4.5 miles, and then road my bike home about eight or ten miles. Did I mention I burned some brush piles last week, maybe a dozen that had been sitting around a couple years, used a Bic lighter, most of 'em took after the first flick. So umm, maybe I'll do a hike tomorrow, with say 30 lbs. or so? Oh, I did snow shoe yesterday too, not sure of my elevation gain, but I was able to ride my board down. Yeah Backpacker ya'll are kinda weak.

What are we supposed to do in the midwest? From one end of the state to the other there's less than 300' of elevation change!

This seems kinda weak to be considered a "tough guy challenge". I did a 7 mile trail run on Fri and I'm 210 lbs so does that mean I can skip day Monday and Wednesday?
