I don't know how you would call swimming in the OR or WA beaches a swimming hole. Few people find that a refreshing swim! Far too cold for most of us.

For sheer beauty, I agree with Dominick, but man that water is cold!!! For bragging rights, the Punchbowl, should be on one's life-list. You will not forget it. And since it is on thousands of calendars and screansavers you will be reminded of it often and get to share the story with your friends, family and co-workers like a war story. "You see that moss covered rock? I jumped off of that! The water must have been 42 degrees on a hot day. Made my head hurt it was so cold... but man was it beautiful." -- or something like that :)

So, In general, is there a generalized, accepted protocol for proper wilderness swimming attire? I'm an ultra light backpacker which is also true of my swimming attire in the wilderness... if you know what I mean.

One of my favorites is Punchbowl Falls on the Eagle Creek Trail in The Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, its crowded but it definitely feels great on a scorching day.

Scott - Yes. The Pacific Ocean is NOT a swimming hole here. In fact, it can be dangerous here. (COLD water, dangerous currents) There is a lake at Ft. Steven State Park (Coffenberry Lake) near this hike, where one could swim. This isn't the best swimming hole hike in Oregon, tho. Makes me wonder if they got the lnk wrong.

To say that the Pacific Ocean is a swimming hole is a bit of a understatement.

The upper peninsula of michigan... doesn't matter really where you go along lake superior and there are fantastic swimming holes.

Rocked Sandbeach Lake today, but passed on the bushwhacking. Lots of mosquitoes up thatta way!
