Get a legit sack when kids are toddlers and it'll keep them warm until they reach the fourth grade. This 20°F mummy is our pick because it's affordable, durable, and true to its rating. The rugged-yet-soft taffeta shell withstood dragging on the ground, and the hollow-core polyester fill doesn't need TLC.

"After a tent door got left open one night in City of Rocks, Idaho, the bag was soaked," said a tester's mom. "We hung it on a branch, and it was dry and ready to pack in about an hour." The hood is easily cinchable without a whole lot of unnecessary cordage to fuss with. The bag compresses down to soccer-ball size. Our 10-year-old tester had no problem with the zipper, but our 5-year-old struggled with snags. And like most bags that use less expensive insulation, it's heavy for the size. $59; 2 lbs. 9 oz.; thenorthface.com.

Save a Few Bucks
Lafuma's Yellowstone Tribal Jr. is a sweet summertime mummy (good to about 45°F) and costs only $40. lafumausa.com.
