Buddy and either a gps or at least a good rundown from a guide or something. Those are intense trips. Guide like www.steliasguides.com take multi-day trips through these areas, which makes it a bit more manageable.

I have spent a few in Alaska and it was out of this world. Definitely, should have a buddy. Unforgiving for rookie mistakes. The more you know the better the experience. Same goes for being in good shape.
