Among the lightest of any liquid-fuel stove we’ve tried, this model proved a reliable, user-friendly cooker during our backcountry ski trip in Iceland, where it produced hot water by the bucket in temps below freezing. The burner has enough flame control that one tester could sauté wild mushrooms in butter without scorching them.
Unlike the Muka (above), the ExpressLander needs to be primed—which entails burning liquid fuel in the priming cup in order to heat the generator tube and convert liquid fuel to a hot-burning vapor. “No problem, once I got the hang of it,” reports a rookie tester.
The wide pot supports and low center of gravity keep big pots stable. And while its five-minute boil time (for a quart of cold water, on average) is not as fast as the Muka’s, the ExpressLander is a few ounces lighter and almost half the price. And it purrs like a Benz, while the Muka chugs like a Mustang.
