Bear Naked Trail Mix

GORP—good ‘ol raisins and peanuts—becomes FAPPS with Bear Naked’s addictive concoction of flax granola clusters, apple slices, pecans, pepitas (pumpkinseeds), and sunflower seeds. What you don’t get in this snack are hydrogenated oils or artificial flavors. Sure, you could buy each of these ingredients in the bulk aisle and make the mix yourself, but when you want as few obstacles as possible lying between you and hitting the trail, this is a quick and easy solution. Other flavors: Chocolate Cherry and Cranberry Protein. Tip: The Chocolate Cherry, though delicious, tends to melt into cocoa clumps on hot days. $3; bearnaked.com

KIND Blueberry Pecan + Fiber Bar

Odwalla Blueberry Swirl Superfood Bar

Blue is the new black, at least when it comes to berries. A host of new snacks include this fruit once confined to the muffin realm. One of our favorites is KIND’s Blueberry Pecan + Fiber bar ($2; kindsnacks.com), which delivers a sweet-nutty crunch of almonds, blueberries, raisins, pecans, cashews, and honey. Biting into it, you feel like you’re eating real food, rather than an amalgam of inscrutable ingredients you can’t pronounce but that will most likely give you gas later that the day. Caveat: These bars aren’t suited for most winter hiking, since a frozen almond is apt to chip a tooth. For chilly days (or to get back to your muffin-y roots), opt for Odwalla’s new Blueberry Swirl Superfood Bar ($1.39, odwalla.com), which is equally delicious and has oats, so it stays soft in cold temps.

Kashi Berry Blossoms

Cereal, no matter how much you love it, isn’t backcountry friendly. It usually gets pulverized into sawdust before you even reach the trailhead. But Jerry Seinfelds of the world (at least those who hike) can rejoice with Kashi’s Berry Blossoms. These whole-grain graham nuggets (what is it about graham that tastes so delicious?) are tossed in a pleasantly sweet fruit blend of strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. They have five grams of fiber, taste yummy, and—most importantly—are surprisingly compact and crush-resistant, making them perfect for either breakfast with powdered milk or as a crunchy addition to your trail mix. $3.59; kashi.com

Turkey Perky Jerky

The name wasn’t chosen just because it rhymes. It’s because the jerky is flavored with guarana—a caffeine-rich fruiting plant from the Amazon—which naturally makes you, well, perky. We already reviewed their beef jerky here. Now the company has rolled out a turkey version for those who either avoid red meat or just prefer the taste. With a slightly sweet taste, tender texture, and few calories (50 per serving), this snack gives you protein and energy on the trail. Bummer: In keeping with the company’s forward-thinking “no preservatives, no MSG” stance, some of us wished the turkeys were free-range. $3 for a 1-oz. bag, $5 for a 2.2-oz. bag; perkyjerky.com

One nice perk about backpacking is that it pretty much gives you a free pass to eat whatever you want and as much as you want. Still, there are times when you may be trying to drop a few pounds or are watching what you eat. In that case, these Fullbites are a good ally, as a standalone snack or as part of your trail mix. With five grams of fiber, 8 grams of protein, and 150 calories, they’re formulated to help you feel full (and did actually fill us up, though they wouldn't suffice as a lunch) but without compromising on taste. Three flavors: Bold Cheddar, Sour Cream & Onion, and Savory BBQ. About $1.67 per bag; fullbar.com
