Gear Review: G3 Tonic/Zest Telemark Ski

Great for powder, but still handles the bumps like a pro, these skis are super smooth.

If you’re like most of us–wish you could ski only powder, ski whatever you get–you’ll love this innovative all-mountain board. It’s designed for the soft stuff, but it’s still quick and nimble, even on a bump run. The camber (see our glossary on page 62) makes it easy to turn, and the long, rockered (upward curving) tip helps the ski stay on top of the snow whether you’re skiing or skinning.

To keep the ski light and eliminate tip chatter on hard snow, G3 added plastic sidewall strips to the front that act like a mountain bike’s suspension, absorbing fluctuations in snow conditions and smoothing out the ride. The result: BMW-like speed and handling for intermediate to advanced skiers. Women’s version is the Zest. Note: If powder is your thing and you want a fatter all-mountain ski–and are willing to schlep a little more weight–check out the Black Diamond Justice (right). $690; 8 lbs. 2 oz.
