How to Tie an Overhand Knot, Mid-Rope

It's the simplest knot to tie, but hard to untie after it's been loaded. That makes the overhand knot secure as a permanent knot. This knot is ideal for creating a loop in the rope with minimal footage.

  • Twist a loop into the bight.
  • Insert the fold of the bight through the loop.
  • Tighten and neaten the knot, removing kinks and sharp twists.
