Job losses translate to better athletic performance among American marathoners
Plenty of Americans have weathered crippling job losses, but not all of them are taking it lying down. In fact, if they're into outdoor fitness, they're running away from the problem, and they're getting faster: Marathon times are up across every age group, and researchers think it's because laid-off runners are concentrating on training rather than rustling up a job.

This article is spot-on for me! Once I was laid off, I needed something to work towards, a marathon was just the ticket to keep me motivated, active and positive. It's an inexpensive and healthy way to work through a tough situation.

This hits very close to home. With two years of under employment and now unemployment I have had ample time to run. Except for the shoes it's inexpensive too. I've been able to cut my mile pace by over a full minute in the 5k. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

After getting laid off early 08, I got on a treadmill and weight circuit and dropped 40lbs in 3-4 mos. Of course it came back as soon as I had to cut the gym membership and later got a new job.
Currently, the economy has curbed vacations that require flights for us, HOWEVER, I think I have helped the economy by dropping a large sack of cash at my area mountaineering stores. I must say that spenidng time outside with the kids has been a positve outcome of this depression, er recession.
