I have a SPOT messaging device and I've greatly expanded the use of the "OK check" feature:

My message uses all the numbers of text characters allowed and reads:

"I'm OK. Dayhike locations will be sent during the day. Basecamp SPOT OK will be sent at arrival and 7PM each evening."

With this system, my first SPOT message sent is upon my arrival at the site I've chosen for my basecamp.

I'm able, also, to send several SPOT messages each day, identifying where I am or have been on my day hikes...and my last SPOT of the day is at 7PM, or later, when I'm back at basecamp.
