>>Arizona:  

Grand Canyon NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: up to 4 months in advance of hike
  • Fee: $10 per permit plus $5 per person per night camped below the rim.
  • Apply: fill out Permit Request Form; send in via fax or mail
  • Where to pick up permit: Backcountry Information Center
  • Website

The Wave (Arizona/Utah): The BLM issues just 20 hiking permits per day for this site.

  • Permit applications are accepted: up to four months in advance via lottery
  • Fee: $5 lottery application fee plus $7 per person at Coyote Buttes North entrance or $5 per person at Coyote Buttes South entrance
  • Apply: online at blm.gov/az/paria or in person
  • Where to pick up permit: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center in Kanab, Utah.

Mt. Whitney:

  • Permit applications are accepted: from February 1 to March 15 via lottery system; after March 15, applications accepted up to two days before trip
  • Fee: $6 application fee; $15 per person reservation fee

Half Dome (Yosemite NP):

  • For 2014, the quota for half dome permits issued for backpackers is 75 permits per day (50 available by reservation and 25 available one day in advance on a first-come, first-serve basis).
  • Permit applications are accepted: up to 24 weeks (168 days) in advance of hike, or via lottery system starting at 11 a.m. one day prior to trip start date.
  • Fee: $8, payable at a wilderness center the day of or day before your trip.
  • Apply: fill out Permit Request Form; send in via mail or fax.
  • Where to pick up permit: at any permit station; before 10 a.m. on day of hike

Yosemite NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: up to 24 weeks (168 days) in advance of hike or on first-come, first-serve basis on day before hike.
  • Fee: $5 per permit reservation, plus $5 per person

  • For 2014, permits are required during quota period (from May 23 to Sept. 27)
  • Permit applications are accepted: two weeks in advance for trips within quota period
  • Fee: $15; submitted with reservation application
  • Apply: fill out Permit Request Form; send in via mail or fax.
  • Where to pick up permit: at Visitor’s Center or any ranger station

>>Colorado:

Rocky Mountain NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: starting March 1 for a permit for that calendar year.
  • Fee: $20 when permit is issued
  • Apply: By mail, phone, or in person
  • Where to pick up permit: Beaver Meadows Visitors Center Backcountry Office or at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center

Everglades NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: 24 hours in advance
  • Fee: Free from April to mid-November; $10 per permit plus $2 per person per night from mid-November to April
  • Apply: In person at the Gulf Coast or Flamingo Visitor’s Center

>>Minnesota:

Voyageurs NP (Boundary Waters):

  • Quota permits are required from May 1 to September 30, 2014
  • Permit applications are accepted: via lottery from December 19 to January 21, 2014; on a first come, first serve basis after January 30
  • Fee: $6 permit reservation fee

 

>>Montana:

Glacier NP:

 Yellowstone NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: from January 1 to October 31; applications accepted before March 31 will be processed randomly via lottery
  • Fee: $25 application fee
  • Apply: Fill out Permit Request Form; send in via mail or fax

>>New Hampshire:

 AMC huts:

  • Reservations can be made: as late as morning-of stay; we recommended making reservations 2-4 weeks ahead of hike to secure a spot.
  • October to May: $25/night for member; $30/night for non-member
  • June-September: $103/night for member; $124/night for non-member

>>North Carolina/Tennessee:
 

Great Smoky Mountains NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: up to 30 days in advance of hike
  • Fee: $4.00 per person, per night, with a maximum fee of $20.00 per person.
  • Apply: online at https://smokiespermits.nps.gov/
  • Where to pick up permit: Sugarlands Visitor Center

>>Texas:

Big Bend NP:

  • Permit applications are accepted: up to 24 hours in advance of hike
  • Fee: $10 per permit

Guadalupe Mountains NP:

  • Permit applications are first come, first serve
  • Fee: Free
  • Apply: in person at the Pine Springs Visitor Center or the Dog Canyon Ranger Station

For the 2014 season, permit reservations can no longer be made one year in advance.

  • Permit applications are accepted: four months to two days ahead of hike.
  • Fee: $30 permit application fee

Zion NP/The Narrows:

  • Permit reservations can be made: up to 3 months in advance, or on the fifth day of the month prior to the month of hike.
  • Fee: $5 permit application fee
