OR: Cool Stuff--Geigerrig Hydration Engine

A new hydration system asks why suck when you can squirt?

It’s always after you’ve climbed something tough, sweat pouring off you, that the thirst seems the most powerful. That’s when the old kung fu between air and water ensues: You stop breathing while you suck from the hydration hose, then you inhale mightily through your nose attempting to build up enough oxygen surplus to swallow the mouthful. Repeat, ad hydratium.

But what if you could turn your hydration reservoir into a low power water gun? The Geigerrig Hydration Engine (available in two and three liters, for $48 and $50, respectively) does just that. Using the same pump the doc uses to measure your blood pressure, the reservoir inflates with enough pressure to force out a liters per minute.

The pressurized system also makes sharing water with your friend or dog less gross, and it keeps mouth bacteria from backwashing into the reservoir and turning it into a petri dish. When it’s time to clean it, it flips inside out and is dishwasher safe.

Snap on an in-line water filter ($28) and have 50-ish gallons go creek to throat with the same pressure. (No word on how it works toward the end of the filter’s life).

The boys in the booth said they put it through some heavy testing, like dropping it from a helicopter, detonating a shrapnel-free bomb next to it, and throwing it out of a moving car (that sounds familiar) but it didn’t leak.

If only for the novelty sake, this thing is pretty cool. It’s possible to pressurize your own reservoir by squeezing it under your arm like bagpipes, or wrenching compression straps hard on it, but the Hydration Engine does that for you—so long as you don’t mind a blood-pressure pump dangling from your shoulder strap. geigerrig.com

I'm skeptical. Except for the people who have extreme cootie phobias, or want to hydrate their dog, or take an impromptu "shower" on the trail, this innovation seems oversold. Since when are you "so out of breath" that sucking water from a tube becomes some kind of monstrous task? Who hasn't run around a track and drunk from a water fountain, which also requires a sucking action? (This is one reason we have noses.) When I want to quench my thirst, I want it now, in the volume my body needs. This device seems to meter it out at a volume less than the demand might call for. Even drinking from a glass involves a sucking action most of the time. We don't tilt our heads back and pour the liquid into our mouths. Indeed, doing so would require a certain caution, lest you accidentally inhale and end up drawing the liquid into your lungs. The inline filter: good. The easier cleaning: good. These are improvements. But "never suck again"?: a clever bit of marketing.

It's a pretty damn cool pack. Got it from amazon, snagged it when it was 70 bucks (retails about 130).

The build of the pack itself is of highest quality, nothing was skimped on. Very ergonomic, plenty ways to pack. Compresses very nicely. Tough materials, you can feel comfortable that they will LAST right from the get-go. I could see taking the pack EVERYwhere with me as my general purpose stuff-carrier for any various activities. It allows maximum mobility.. even for most tedious adventuring. It doesn't stand in the way whatsoever of any given task. I have no doubt, this will be a delight to work with.

And it LOOKS badass.. It's totally tactical-like, action hero-y. At least to me.

The hydration action itself. Yeah there's people that are weary of the pressurization engine, saying it's a gimmick. I tell you... it works like a dream though. The little pump bulb never bothers. It's in a position on the shoulder strap where you don't really even as much as brush up to any part of your arm.... I guess unless you try. A nice flow of fluid sans the 'sucking' is very much welcome.

The fact that you're be able to share through spraying is awesome. I carry water for the very least two people at all times! And plus coupled with the ability to wash things off is really a handy feature. Further, the filtering option is pretty damn awesome too.

Pressure with the bulb vs. a user suggested method of applying pressure to the pack is two totally different animals. The whole point is and 'effortless' drinking action and this is it.

The system is not a gimmick as it works flawlessly and even makes the whole experience of carrying a hydration pack that much better.

I think this products clearly sets a new gold standard as to how other company should build theirs.

I put my normal bladder on top of the main portion of my pack underneath the cinchable top, and use that to slightly pressurize the water. The regular bladder & components aren't designed for this, though. My bite valve leaks under pressure - on bladders from a number of manufacturers. I'd rather have a blood pressure pump hanging off my shoulderstrap than a leaky valve.

Jesubmar: Growing your own garden, biking to work, Nuclear Fusion, Hydration Packs - Have you answered your Pop Sci question regarding the carrying capacity of earth and the restructuring of human consciousness? Your concerns are shared by many.

Kudos for all the ideas Joachim has come up with. Humans are going to need as many as possible to get through this "Anthropocene" epoch. Not all ideas are going to work but brainstorming is the best bet. I suggest all of you, including visionaries like Joachim, who have a deep passion and love for life on this our home planet read "The Ecotechnic Future" by John Michael Greer; it may help open some "eyes" and it may make some stay closed. Question is what is the carrying capacity of Earth to sustain humans and all other life forms sustainably? Unlimited energy sources such as fusion reactors (highly unlikely - if we can transition from fossil fuels and overcome technical barriers) will only keep powering the current industrial (destructive) economy. Without a fundamental re-structuring of human consciousness there is little hope for future human generations surviving far into the future. However, the current and deepening environmental crises we are living through will help bring about this needed change. Wether we make it or not is not a concern of Earth; it has seen countless species come and go. It is our choice to stay or go and we make these choices everyday. Bike to work, grow your own garden, support a non-profit environmental organization, make close friends and above all keep a sense of humor. All my relations, peace

Dude, we could add a small flexible solar panel with a low voltage mini pump instead of the hand pump and we'd be able to put out campfires in seconds!
Really, just another marketing gimmick that unneccessarily makes a very simple idea (using your muscles in your mouth and face to power suction)into a complicated one for most people.
On the other hand, serioulsy speaking, there may be an application for people with disabilities or recovering veterans who have lost this ability. Kudos for trying but no thanks for me. Keep inventin'.

GEIGERRIG
Jan 27, 2011

We would like to thank 3M and the engineers and folks at SNEWS for giving GEIGERRIG such a thorough review. We originally thought that we would be able to present the GEIGERRIG so as to help the engineers review the product and assess all of the many benefits that it provides. No doing though. They asked us to hand over the goods and to trust that they would figure the product out. We agreed that that is the best way to really determine if a product is intuitive and truly of value.

The GEIGERRIG was submitted under the accessory category, but it was awarded the best new product under the hardgoods category. Winning in the hardgoods category was a surprise, and we were very grateful.

Me and my fellow Marine Corps Officers always found it silly that a platoon of Marines, with 200 lbs of water spread-loaded in the hydration packs of 40 Marines, could not effectively and conveniently share the water and use the water for all of the many purposes that we were carrying it for. Quickly and easily spraying out wounds, cleaning our bodies, spraying off gear, sharing the water for hydration, filtering water available in streams rivers and creeks...all of this should be easily provided by a hydration pack. Geigerrig provides these benefits and more.

From a civilian perspective, the issues are still the same. Outdoor activity is familial, social and communal. We enjoy our outdoor activities with others... And water is THE key ingredient to safe, enjoyable outdoor performance. The ability to easily spray to clean, spray to cool, spray to share, spray to drink, spray to filter, etc should be expected, convenient benefits of a hydration pack. GEIGERRIG provides these.

And, GEIGERRIG Hydration Engines flip inside out for cleaning in the dish washer or airing out at a camp site.

We're glad that these benefits were self-evident to the engineers and critics who studied the products at Outdoor Retailer.

Thank you Backpacker. Thank you SNEWS. Thank you Outdoor Retailer.

Sincerely,

GEIGERRIG

You can use it as a normal bladder, and the initial pressurization will spray out the majority of water...including pushing the water through the filter--removing 99.9% giardia, crypto and bacteria.

Bob
Jan 27, 2011

Interesting is that this system enables the pack carrier to conveniently access water for so many purposes and uses with no more effort than a quick pinch of the bite valve or slight touch of the bite valve with your teeth. Also, the drink tube can host an inline filter that filters the water as it travels through the drink tube to the users mouth -- removing 99.9% of Giardia, Crypto and Bacteria.

The system has a lifetime warranty on leakage, so not as much worry about the bite valve falling off as many of us have experienced with other packs.

Easily share your water. Easily use the water to spray off your gear and body. Easily access and use more water using the filtration system.

A finished GEIGERRIG pack is the same price as comparable packs by other companies. But the use and access to the water is greatly improved.

There is a great video about how this product does not affect pack capacity or pack weight.

The initial pressurization drains the vast majority of the water in the bladder.

Greg
Jan 25, 2011

Hmm.. I have to see this in action. It is really no big deal the 'normal way' to me. A full bladder takes up a bit of room in the bag and by looking at the pic that thing is really pumped up that could make it a PITA getting it into a full pack after refilling. But I guess you could just pump it up afterwards. Besides, if the mouth piece falls off you could really dump a lot of water quick. Not earthshattering or AH! for me. I will spend my money elsewhere, just my arm chair, poorly informed view..

mark
Jan 25, 2011

Novel idea, but I never have to suck to get water out of my bladder now, just a bite on the valve and the waters flowing fine...

Keith
Jan 25, 2011

Or you could do what I do and either apply pressure with your hand to the bladder or push your back against something and release the nozzle, bam you have a water gun. May I have $50 bucks for my insight?

Cole
Jan 25, 2011

can you still use it as a normal bladder? or do you have to pressurize it every time you want to use it?

eric
Jan 25, 2011

why not make an adapter that turns any res bladder into a pressurized res bladder? i'd buy that instead of buying yet another one to clutter up the gear closet.
