Backpacker Magazine – October 2007
Pretty pictures and promises of a trade might get unenthusiastic spouses out the door.
First, never utter these phrases: 23-mile day, ramen stroganoff, experimental tarp system. Then, after a glass of wine, pull out the map and photos (touting moderate trails, waterfalls, romantic views), and a weather forecast that promises a good highlight-to-hardship ratio. Finally, offer to spend a weekend enjoying your partner's favorite activity. That's the advice from Randy and Sheri Propster, our Get Out More road crew, after polling hikers at the 50 backpacking clinics they've conducted since March.

A special thanks to Randy & Sheri whom did a wonderful presentation in Billings Mt. on Oct 1. They presented information in such a way that they were complimenting us on what we did know and not being critical of what we didn't know. They also took the time to help with the new gear for each of us. With a special interest in helping my 11yr old pack his new pack and making sure of the proper fit.
Just met Randy and Sheri this past weekend at Mast General Store in Greenville, SC. Their "Get Out More" presentation was great. It gave lots of good safety tips and reviewed existing and new gear that make a trip more comfortable.
I filed a story with the Anderson Idependent Mail where I write a weekly outdoor column to share some of their tips.
Thanks Backpacker Magazine.
